Animal tracking on the Common

From previous consultation activities it was clear that local residents felt that an animal and nature theme for the artworks and street furniture would be appropriate. Working with Sheffield Wildlife Trust we wanted to find out what animals lived in the area.  With the Loxley and Wadley Common on everyone's doorstep it was a natural progression to investigate in that area.

Evening animal trap setting and bat walk
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side but a few hardy locals turned up to learn how to set humane animal traps with Sarah from the Wildlife Trust. We also used Bat tranmitters to hear any bats in the area. These were all hiding unfortuantly and keeping out of the rain but we did
see a Tawny Owl.

Morning animal trap release and tracking

Early the next morning, with better weather a few more people turned up to check the traps. Unfortunately they were empty but everyone learnt a lot from Sarah and some of the more knowlegable local residents. We also learnt about the tracks that certain animals leave and so
were able to identify a few of these.

Although we didn’t manage to actually see many of the animals, Sarah was able to give us all a really great idea and lots of information about the animal that live in the area.
