The Tree Trail Event was part of the consulation process for the streetscene improvements. As part of the street scene improvements happening in the area, some of the very large trees are being removed. The reason for this is that a lot of them have simply grown too large for the area and have become dangerous, diseased or are damaging the footpaths. For every one that is removed, a tree of a more suitable species will be planted.
So to bring awareness to everyone in the area and to bid some of the trees farewell we organised the Tree Trail event....
...Well, after our first cancelled attempt at running the event we managed to set it up for Thursday the 3rd March instead...and luckily it didn't snow but was glorious sunshine...
The morning was spend busily dressing all the trees with the help of Jon our arborist who had the peculiar job of climbing up trees and spending most of the morning sewing on knitted sqaures!
We had the help of Stephen from Grow Sheffield running tours around the area explaining all about the trees in the area and their proporties as a great timber resource.
Thanks to all the groups involved who helped decorate the trees:
The Methodist Knit and Chat Group
Special thanks to Alison and her crew of lovely ladies who knitted like mad to create the largest tree jumper ever seen in Sheffield!
The Horticultural Society
Thanks for Pete Sides for the images we stuck onto the hundreds of seed packets attached to their tree. These were for the taking and hopefully Wisewood is going to be growing crazy after this.
Wisewood Secondary School
We worked with a Year 8 class to create stories from the point of view of objects you might find around Wisewood. They illustrated their stories and then recorded them. These were played from the branches of one of the trees on the trail and caused many passers by to look around confused at the talking tree!
Wisewood Brownies
We worked with the Brownies to create giant badges, like the ones they get awarded, but for Wisewood. We talked about the kinds of places, people and activities you can find in the area and illustrated them through these drawings. These were then sewn onto a giant sash and put around one of the trees.
Wisewood Primary School
We asked all the students in year 5 Mr Brown's class to take photos of Wisewood and create 3D collages of some of the things they like about their area and some of the things they would like to change. These were then displayed on a tree trail tree.
Wisewood Rainbows
We worked with the Rainbows group to create acrostic poems using the word ‘Wisewood’. They then decorated the letters of Wisewood inspired by their poems.
Loxley Primary School

Loxley Primary School
The year one class created paper leaves to replace the ones it lost in the winter. They decorated the leaves by using different painting techniques using straws, string and old toothbrushes!
